Edward Hopper House Presents MILTON GLASER: LANDSCAPE PRINTS, September 7 - November 4, 2018, with Opening Reception, Thursday, September 13, 6:30 - 8:30pm

Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center is pleased to announce an exhibition of landscape prints by renowned graphic designer Milton Glaser

The opportunity to exhibit in Edward Hopper’s home is one that Mr. Glaser has taken as both a great honor and an impetus to create his latest and most personal works to date.

The exhibition has drawn attention to a number of connections shared between the two artists and their artistic development, including the influence of time spent in Europe as young men, the resulting decision of each to turn toward a different artistic medium, and a mutual love for the Hudson Valley.

This show will feature numerous landscape explorations influenced by the late monotypes of Edgar Degas, which are also reminiscent of Hopper’s early paintings. In each case, Glaser begins with a drawing – in black and white or color – made from both memory and observation. He then uses a range of digital processes to layer a variety of patterns on top of and below the image, effectively creating a virtual lithographic press. This procedure, which enables him to discern and control the slightest changes in color, has resulted in a series of new works by Glaser that offer an at-once-familiar but unique perspective on the natural beauty of the Hudson Valley.

Milton Glaser is among the most celebrated graphic designers in the world today. His work has been featured in exhibitions and museums throughout the world, including one-man-shows at the Museum of Modern Art and the Georges Pompidou Center. He is the recipient of lifetime achievement awards from both the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum and the Fulbright Association.

In 1974, he opened Milton Glaser, Inc., where he continues to produce a prolific amount of work, including the iconic I ❤ N Y symbol; perhaps the most replicated symbol of our time. He is also co-founder of New York Magazine and Push Pin Studios.

An exhibition poster and special edition post card books designed by Milton Glaser will be available for sale at Edward Hopper House.

As part of this exhibition, there will be an Interview with Milton Glaser by Ken Carbone on Saturday, October 13th, 2018 at 2pm.

Local residing design guru Ken Carbone will be interviewing Milton Glaser and will touch on Glaser’s long and creative career that continues to transform corporations, organizations and everyday imagery, Carbone will provide the setting and context for the artist (Glaser) to share his approach to art. There is no fine art vs. commercial art to Glaser, it is all art, and it this devotion to the creative process that guides his powerful vision.

Celebrate the arts and artists in their own environments at the ArtWalk Kingston Open Studio Tour, September 22 -23, 2018.

Over the course of two days, visitors and local residents are invited to explore 3 distinct areas of the City of Kingston and immerse themselves in a range of art and events.

Riverside Galleries, Garrison Art Center, 2 Opening Exhibitions: "Some Stories" Melinda Stickney & "BassWood Bodies" Victoria Thorson

The Riverside Galleries at Garrison Art Center in Garrison, New York, announces Two Exhibition Openings, August 11 - September 9, 2018 with a public reception for the artists on Saturday, August 11 from 5 -7pm.

The artists include Melinda Stickney-Gibson and Victoria Thorson.

Melinda Stickney-Gibson, Smooch,  60 x 80 inches

Melinda Stickney-Gibson's paintings and painted “tapestries”  involve a diaristic, personal and often graphic approach. Her paintings and sculptural pieces literally incorporate tiny bits of writing from her own journals, favorite fragments of writing by others and universal words such as “yes," “maybe," “no?," “her,” “ummm….,” etc. This aspect of the work is absolutely in relationship to her longtime love of the physical act of painting and her visceral love of the paint itself.

One work that will be featured in the exhibition is LOSING LARSEN C, a painting that is a personal commentary on a gigantic ancient ice cap, named Larsen C, which is rapidly losing mass.

Stickney-Gibson has been living and working as an artist in New York for over 25 years. In addition to painting, she creates sculptural work incorporating steel, glass, concrete and wire often resting on steel wall-mounted ledges or installed on the floor itself.

Victoria Thorson’s sculptures tread a line between recognizable form and pure abstraction. She has been seduced by basswood. Its softness of touch when smooth, evokes the human body. Starting with lumber or recycled wood, Thorson sees potential shapes and feels her way along the cracks, knots and grain, following the lines of energy. She carves and refines to create slits of light between masses and discovers abstract forms to express life’s silences and vibrations.

Her work is often anchored by a re-purposed metal industrial find that is the right weight, proportion and aesthetic to be part of the piece, not a separate base. Most pieces can rotate 360 degrees or swing out to recompose, while the initial core and plumb line stay intact. This exhibition will also feature several ceramics Thorson created in the 90s working with sculptor Peter Gourfain, who taught her to sharpen a wood tool and cut clear planes when the clay was right to the touch. Gallery visitors will see the evolution as Thorson brought her fluid form-language from clay to wood.

Garrison Art Center in Collaboration with Magazzino Italian Art Presents Remo Salvadori, Marco Bagnoli, Domenico Bianchi, Saturday, March 10, 2018

This is a special collaborative curated opportunity with Magazzino Italian Art to experience selected works from these artists on exhibit at The Riverside Galleries at Garrison Art Center. The exhibition will be on view March 10 -April 8, 2018, with an opening reception on Saturday, March 10 from 5 - 7pm.

Remo Salvadori, born in 1947 in Cerreto Guidi, near Vinci in the province of Florence,  currently lives and works in Milan. Salvadori’s important solo exhibitions include those at the Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venice (2005); Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci, Prato (1997); Magasin,Centre National d’Art Contemporain, Grenoble (1991); and the Italian Cultural Institute and The Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto (1987).

Marco Bagnoli, born in 1949 in Empoli, has long been a presence at major international exhibitions including the Venice Biennial (1982, 1993, 1997), Documenta in Kassel (1982 and 1992) and Sonsbeek in Arnhem (1986).

Domenico Bianchi, born in 1955 in Rome, lives and works there today. Bianchi attended the city’s Accademia di Belle Arti, and at age 22 made his debut with a solo exhibition at Salvatore Ala Gallery in New York. In the years that followed, his work was shown at the Galerie Swart in Amsterdam, Yvon Lambert in Paris, Gian Enzo Sperone in Rome and New York, LA Louver Gallery in Los Angeles and Galleria Christian Stein in Turin and Milan.

The materials utilized by Marco Bagnoli, Domenico Bianchi and Remo Salvadori do not stray far from the commonplace pre-industrial objects that defined the “poor art” movement, but these pieces seem to transcend - adding allusions to the spiritual, the cosmic and the soul.

This exchange is the first between the two Hudson Valley arts organizations. Garrison Art Center and Magazzino Italian Art are dedicated to promoting the exhibition and enjoyment of art through educational and cultural experiences. This exhibition will feature select works on loan from the Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu Collection. Olnick and Spanu founded Magazzino Italian Art, which opened in 2017, and is home to one of the most comprehensive collections of Post-war Italian Art and Design in the United States.

Salvadori, Bagnoli and Bianchi represent the next generation, following the Arte Povera movement, and are examples of the artistic talent flourishing in Italy today. These three artists were featured during the Magazzino Italian Art inaugural season. This exhibition at Garrison Art Center is an opportunity to view additional works by these prominent contemporary artists.

The Residency provides recipient with:

The Georgia Fee Artist | Writer Residency was established in memory of ArtSlant’s Founder, Georgia Fee, who passed away December 8, 2012. Georgia was dedicated to supporting and investing in artists and writers and had a deep connection with the city of Paris.

The Residency selects artists and writers who critically engage with the city of Paris, its history and its potential. It provides an opportunity for awardees to explore the cultural landscape of the city, to deepen their practice through experimentation and research and to increase exposure of their work to an international audience.

Visual artists of all mediums, art writers, and critics, 24 years or older are welcome to apply.

Selection is made based on the merit of past work, the potential for future success, the ability to independently develop new work and the proposed project’s relevance to the city of Paris. Recipients will be required to produce a serial, web-based component (blog, visual essay, hyper-textual experiment, etc.) which will be hosted on ArtSlant.com.
