Shearer’s work draws upon a visual lexicon of portraiture and representation of the body, often using found imagery that he collects and archives as source material. Through this process, contemporary imagery is distilled into the tradition of portraiture revealing affinities between various modes of figuration throughout history to the present.

This workshop focuses on the dialogue that exists between Shearer’s formal drawings, preparatory sketches and finished paintings and invites participants to explore the same in their own artistic practice.

For your Next Netflix Binge, Watch: "Abstract: The Art of Design," An 8-Episode Series About People Working in Art and Design

Original Posting: PetaPixal, February 20, 2017
                            Author: DL Cade

If you appreciate visual art and aesthetics—then you absolutely must watch the new Netflix original docu-series “Abstract: The Art of Design.”

The newly minted 8-episode series follows “eight of the most creative thinkers and imaginative minds working in the world of art and design today,” and ever since it came out on Netflix we’ve been receiving email, after tip, after Facebook message about it. Now that we’ve gotten around to actually watching it, we could not recommend it more highly.

Even though only one of the eight episodes follows a photographer—world-famous portrait photographer Platon—all eight are worth binge watching your way though immediately. They will give you a new appreciation for the creative process, inspire you to take your own work to the next level and leave you amped up to go out and create something new right away.

There’s not much more we look for from a documentary series, much less one that isn’t even about photography in particular, but about the much broader pursuits of “design” and “art.”

Check out the series trailer up top; if you’re a Netflix subscriber, you can watch all 8 episodes right now at this link.

The Culinary Institute of America’s Newest Restaurant Opening—POST ROAD BREW HOUSE

Post Road Brew House is a casual, contemporary American beer-driven pop-up restaurant combining seasonal Hudson Valley cuisine with classic European gastro-classics.

PostRoadBrewHouse_image

The Post Road Brew House serves as an extension of the Brewery at the CIA offering an extensive beer menu including CIA brews, local craft beers alongside Hudson Valley wines and spirits and gastro pub fare.

The a-la-carte menu, created by Executive Chef and Assistant Professor Theo Roe, includes a mix of casual and classic appetizers, entrees and sides designed to pair perfectly with the beer selection. With an emphasis on seasonal Hudson Valley ingredients, American comfort dishes like Pastrami Reuben Sandwich, The Post Road Burger, and Deviled Eggs are balanced out by European gastro-classics like Housemade Charcuterie, Classic Cassoulet, and Fish & Chips.

The beer menu at Post Road Brew House has been curated by the CIA's head brewer, Hutch Kugeman, working closely with the chef. On tap, eight draught beers are featured, including those made by the Brewery at the CIA, and others through collaboration with New York State breweries. Among the selections on the opening menu are the Cleaver IPA (6.7% abv) and Mise en Place Wit (4.6% abv), both of which are staples from the Brewery at the CIA. The Beefsteak Blonde (5.7% abv) is a traditional German-style Kolsch. The latest beer from the Brewery's Art and Science of Brewing class is the Wee Chef Scotch Ale (7.5% abv). The Smash Stout (6.0% abv) brewed with Indian Lager Farmstead in Altamont, NY and C.H. Evans Brewing in Albany, as well as a not-yet-named Pilsner brewed with Community Beer Works of Buffalo, NY, will also be served.

Located within the former St. Andrew's Café, the bar at Post Road Brew House is the star of the room. The decor throughout the restaurant is contemporary with an eclectic mix of new, found and repurposed furnishings that reference brewery culture, CIA history and Hudson Valley agriculture.

Post Road Brew House is open from February 16 to June 15, 2017 for dinner and March 24 to May 4 for lunch. Reservations are recommended, but walk-ins for the bar or dining room are also welcome.

BKLYN DESIGN Launches Competition for Brooklyn-Made Innovative Installation

For the first time in the show’s history, BKLYN DESIGNS is commissioning an original, site-specific installation to be displayed at the Brooklyn Expo Center in Greenpoint from May 5-7, 2017.

This juried competition is open to Brooklyn-based artists, designers, architects, engineers and others with demonstrated experience in the conceptualization, design and production of creative installations.

The installation, based on the concept of connectivity, offers another avenue for designers, architects, artists and makers to illustrate their
work during NYCxDESIGN, the official citywide celebration of design, to a large audience of design trade professionals and design savvy consumers.

BklynDesign

Concepts should also take the BKLYN DESIGNS venue into consideration and demonstrate an understanding that it will coexist with exhibitors, a curated marketplace, panels, workshops, and visitors over the course of the three-day show. Installations can be grounded or suspended and exterior installations, if weather-resistant, will also be considered.

Presented by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and co-produced with Novità Communications, BKLYN DESIGNS is Brooklyn’s premier design event showcasing the borough’s strong creative community.

Attendees include designers, architects, builders, store buyers, industry influencers, educators, urban planners and design-savvy consumers, all coming together to celebrate the borough's rich design heritage, iconic style and bustling creative community.

Proposals with creative concepts and a mission statement explaining how the project relates to BKLYN DESIGNS and the theme of connectivity are due by March 10, 2017.

Submissions will be reviewed by a jury of design experts and the winner will be announced in late March. The winning designer or design team will be awarded $1,000 for the design and construction of the installation and showcased as a special feature of the show.

For more information and the full creative brief, visit BKLYN DESIGNS 2017 Installation Competition

With thousands of visitors over the three-day weekend, BKLYN DESIGNS is one of the most vibrant shows in New York City. The 2017 edition is May 5-7 at the Brooklyn Expo Center in Greenpoint.

About BKLYN DESIGNS
Founded in 2003 by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, BKLYN DESIGNS was one of the first design fairs to shine a spotlight on the creative economy in Brooklyn, and helped put many Brooklyn makers and supporters on the map.
